Tour Overview
Orchha Extension Tour
Orchha sits on a bend in the Betwa River in Madhya Pradesh, 15 kilometres from Jhansi and 175 kilometres from Khajuraho. This 2-day extension covers the fort complex, riverside cenotaphs, the Ram Raja Temple, and one of the largest Indian Vulture colonies in Central India.
The fort complex holds three key structures built across different eras. The Orchha Fort, Raja Mahal, and Jahangir Mahal each carry a different character. The Jahangir Mahal stands as one of the finest examples of Mughal-Rajput architecture in India.
Orchha is atmospheric and largely uncrowded. The chhatris line the Betwa riverbank in a long row. The vulture colony roosts in old trees along the river cliff. Both are significant and rarely seen together in a single destination.
Tour Itinerary
Orchha Extension Tour
Day 1: Arrive in Orchha, Fort Complex and Betwa Riverbank
You drive into Orchha from Jhansi, 15 kilometres away, or onward from Khajuraho, 175 kilometres away. Orchha sits on a bend in the Betwa River, its sandstone forts and cenotaphs rising directly from the bank. After check-in you spend the afternoon on foot through the fort complex. The Orchha Fort, Raja Mahal, and Jahangir Mahal are the three key structures, each built in a different era and carrying a different character. The Jahangir Mahal is among the finest examples of Mughal-Rajput architecture in India. As the light drops, you walk to the Betwa riverbank. The chhatris, the cenotaphs of Orchha's rulers, stand in a long row against the evening sky. You overnight in Orchha.
Day 2: Ram Raja Temple, Vulture Colony and Onward Journey
An early morning visit to the Ram Raja Temple. It is the only temple in India where Ram is worshipped as a king rather than a deity, with a full military guard of honour at morning prayers. From the temple you walk or drive to the riverside vulture colony on the Betwa. Orchha holds one of the largest known colonies of Indian Vultures in Central India, roosting in old trees along the river cliff. It is a significant wildlife sighting in an unexpected setting. You check out and drive to Jhansi for your onward train or flight, or continue to Khajuraho or Panna.
