Majuli Island Extension Tour

Majuli sits in the Brahmaputra river in Assam, reached by ferry from Nimatighat near Jorhat. This 3-day extension takes you through the island’s satras, Mising villages, mask-making workshops, and hand-built pottery traditions across one of the most culturally layered destinations in northeast India.

Majuli is the world’s largest river island and one that keeps changing shape. The Brahmaputra’s braided channel system shifts the island’s boundaries with each monsoon, and the communities here have built their lives and culture around that constant movement.

The satras are living monastic institutions preserving Sattriya dance, devotional music, and traditional crafts passed teacher-to-disciple across centuries. The Mising community’s stilt houses and loom patterns carry migration histories that anthropologists still study. Majuli is unlike anywhere else in India.

Tour Itinerary

Majuli Island Extension Tour

Day 1: Guwahati to Majuli via Jorhat and Nimatighat Ferry

You leave Guwahati at dawn. The drive to Jorhat takes around six and a half to seven hours, passing tea gardens that roll in long orderly waves through the Assam plains. You reach Nimatighat by mid-afternoon and board the ferry to Majuli. The crossing takes around 45 minutes to one hour depending on river flow. The Brahmaputra here is wide enough to make you question whether it is a river at all. You check into a traditional bamboo cottage on arrival. In the evening you walk through a nearby village as birds settle into the reeds.

Day 2: Satras, Mask-Makers and Mising Culture

You visit Kamalabari and Auniati Satra in the morning. These are living monastic institutions where monks preserve Sattriya dance, one of India’s classical dance forms codified centuries ago and passed teacher-to-disciple through medieval Assamese Vaishnavite tradition. You continue to Samaguri Satra, home of Majuli’s famous mask-makers. Their techniques combine bamboo frames layered with cow dung and clay to create lightweight and expressive theatrical masks. In the afternoon you visit Mising families. Their stilt houses and weaving traditions reflect deep adaptation to riverine life, and their loom patterns carry migration histories that anthropologists still study. The day ends at a quiet riverbank sunset.

Day 3: Paddy Fields, Pottery Village and Ferry Back to Guwahati

A slow morning walk through paddy fields that shift colour dramatically with the angle of sunlight. You visit a pottery village where artisans shape clay entirely by hand with no potter’s wheel, using techniques that mirror prehistoric Indian pottery styles. By late morning you take the ferry back to Nimatighat and drive to Guwahati, arriving by evening.
