Tour Overview

A four-day Pilibhit safari takes you into one of the most rewarding - and least crowded - tiger reserves in northern India. Declared a tiger reserve in 2014 and awarded the TX2 Award in 2022 for doubling its tiger population, Pilibhit covers over 730 square kilometres of Terai forest along the India-Nepal border, just three hours from Lucknow. Over 100 rivers and streams run through the reserve, creating a mosaic of grassland, wetland, and dense teak and sal forest where Bengal tigers, leopards, fishing cats, swamp deer, elephants, and gharials all share the same landscape. The Sharda Sagar reservoir on the park's eastern edge draws large concentrations of waterbirds and is among the most scenic corners of the reserve.

With over 326 bird species recorded - including the Bengal florican and the Sarus crane - Pilibhit is also one of Uttar Pradesh's finest birding destinations, particularly through the winter months when migratory species arrive from Central Asia. The surrounding Terai is home to the Tharu people, whose traditions and deep knowledge of the forest add a cultural layer to the journey. A four-day trip here combines genuine wilderness with a quietness that India's more famous reserves lost long ago.

Tour Highlights

  • Enjoy six exclusive open jeep safaris across morning and evening drives in Pilibhit Tiger Reserve.
  • Look for Bengal tigers, leopards, swamp deer, fishing cats, elephants and gharials during the safaris.
  • Visit the Sharda Sagar reservoir, which attracts many waterbirds during the winter months.
  • Explore the Terai landscape with tall grass, teak and sal forests, rivers and streams.

Park you will visit

Pilibhit

Uttar Pradesh

A tiger reserve that few have heard of, fewer have visited, and almost none forget. Pilibhit Tiger Reserve sits at the base of the Himalayas in the Terai forests of Uttar Pradesh - a landscape of tall grass, teak woodland, and over 100 rivers and streams that weave through the forest floor. This is one of India's newest and most promising tiger landscapes, and it is barely three hours from Lucknow.

Days 1 - 4

Day 1

Arrival in Lucknow, Pilibhit transfer & evening safari

The drive from Lucknow takes around three hours, passing through the agricultural plains of Uttar Pradesh before sugarcane fields give way to the first stands of tall Terai forest. Check in on arrival and head out for your first evening safari as the light drops and the forest shifts into its most active hours - tigers on the tracks, swamp deer at the grass clearings, and the alarm calls that tell you where to look.

Day 2

Morning & Evening Safari, Overnight stay Kanha

Rise before dawn and enter the forest as mist sits low over the grass and the first light filters through the teak canopy. Morning is the best time for tiger sightings, with cats still moving from the night. After breakfast and an afternoon rest, head back out for the evening drive through different zones of the reserve - denser forest, open grassland, riverine corridors - each with its own character.

Day 3

Morning & Evening Safari, Overnight stay Kanha

By Day 3 you are reading the forest differently - the pushed grass, the fresh prints in the mud, the sudden silence that means something large is near. The evening safari is often the most memorable of the trip, with golden hour light on the tall grass and waterbirds coming in to roost over the reservoir.

Day 4

Morning Safari, Checkout After Breakfast

One last morning in the forest before the three-hour drive back to Lucknow. Pilibhit earns its place quietly - through atmosphere, growing tiger numbers, and the feeling of somewhere genuinely wild that the rest of the world has not yet found.
