National Park Off Days

by | Big Cats India

India boasts a wealth of more than 100 national parks, each offering a unique glimpse into the country’s diverse wildlife and landscapes. However, planning your visit requires considering not just the ideal season for spotting tigers or witnessing bird migrations but also the park’s designated closure days and seasonal shutdowns.

Weekly Closures

Many national parks in India observe a weekly closure, typically on Wednesdays. This means park authorities suspend safaris and other core activities within the park boundaries. However, some buffer zones surrounding the park might remain open, offering alternative exploration options during this time. For instance, Madhya Pradesh’s renowned parks like Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Pench all follow a Wednesday afternoon closure for safaris.

Festival Closures

Major Indian festivals like Holi (celebrating colors) and Diwali (festival of lights) often lead to national park closures for a day or two. While these vibrant celebrations offer a unique cultural experience, factor in these dates to avoid disappointment during your wildlife adventure.

Seasonal Shutdowns

The monsoon season in India, roughly from June to September, brings heavy rainfall, making park navigation difficult and potentially dangerous. Consequently, many parks undergo a complete shutdown during this period. However, there are exceptions. Parks like Periyar and Nagarhole that remain open year-round, while the parks of central and northern India have buffer zones open for tourism. Parks like Bandhavgarh, Tadoba, Kanha, and Pench might offer limited access during the monsoon.

Planning Your Trip

To ensure a smooth national park experience, consider these tips:

  • Choose your park: Research the specific wildlife and landscapes you’re interested in, then identify parks known for these.
  • Check closure schedules: National park websites or official tourism portals often provide detailed information on closure days and seasonal shutdowns.
  • Consider the buffer zones: While core areas might be closed, buffer zones offer alternative exploration opportunities during some closures.
  • Be flexible: If your travel dates clash with a closure, consider adjusting your itinerary or exploring a different park with a more suitable schedule.

By understanding national park closures and seasonal variations, you can plan your Indian wildlife adventure for optimal wildlife viewing and a truly unforgettable experience.
